In this day and age, it is important to conserve as much water as possible. Fresh and clean water is a limited resource in the world – there is only so much that an exponentially growing population has access to. You may think that the planet Earth, which is about 70% water, has plenty of this resource and we should not worry. However, this is certainly not true since ocean water is not water that we humans can use. Ocean water needs to undergo desalination – a very costly process. Therefore, we depend on rainwater for most of our water usage. In many locations, such as Seattle or New York City, this is not a problem as these cities receive enough rainfall and a lot more to cover their citizens’ water needs. In other locations, reliance on rainwater can be problematic. This is because many cities throughout the world do not receive consistent rainfall.
For instance, when droughts occur, our access to clean and fresh water is severely limited. An example of this is the recent and horrific drought that is going on in California, a very important state and center of agricultural production. When such occurrences happen, it is crucial that we humans take as many steps as possible to reduce our water usage.
A main reason for this is, without much water, the cost of water goes up. Water is just like any resource, and when supply goes down (rainfall is the supply in this case), cost will increase dramatically. In areas where the economy is centered around agriculture, such as in California, this causes a major hindrance to the economy as producing agriculture all of a sudden costs more money. For that reason, we must conserve as much water as possible.
There are three main reasons why people should do their absolute best to save as much water as possible:
- The less water we use, the less clean water that will become contaminated. This is because when we use excess amounts of water, we put a strain on sewage systems throughout our local communities. This results in the groundwater becoming contaminated since the untreated, impure water trickles from the septic and sewage systems and into the ground. This is an incredibly bad result as not only are we using too much water, but we are also wasting clean water that we could have otherwise used.
- When we conserve water, we reduce energy usage and thus, save households money. Most of the energy we use today is nonrenewable, meaning once we use it, it is gone forever and we have a limited amount of it. It is important to conserve energy usage in order to save our planet from carbon emissions as well. In other words, we must save our environment before it is too late.
- Furthermore, as we save up water today, we allow numerous cities to plan for the efficient usage of water in the future. That means less taxes!!
In the future, there will undoubtedly be more advanced technologies and innovations that make it easier for us to save water. However, until these new methods become more prevalent and widespread throughout the world, we must do all we can to conserve water with the limited resources we have today.
